eBay watch: Original 1968 Alan Aldridge-designed The Arts and Censorship event posters

Aldridge

Finding just one original 1960s event poster would be a find, but the seller here has obviously found a quantity of original Alan Aldridge-designed The Arts and Censorship event posters somewhere – and is selling them for a very reasonable price on eBay.

The poster was printed in 1968 for a large event put on by The National Council for Civil Liberties and  The Defence of Literature & The Arts Society at the Royal Festival Hall on Monday 9th December 1968. Aldridge did the artwork for the event, which featured the likes of The Grateful Dead, John Peel, Rita Tushingham, George Melly and Paul Jones to name just a few.

The poster is printed on coated paper stock in full colour, sized around 31 x 20 inches. Condition is described as 'good', but with the occasional bent corner due to storage for 40+ years. Price? A very affordable £30.18 on a 'buy it now'. More than 10 are available.

eBay watch: Signed Alan Aldridge Chelsea Girls poster

Aldridge

Yes, it's more than a bit pricey, but this signed Alan Aldridge Chelsea Girls poster is an iconic image and one you'll rarely find on eBay.

Chelsea Girls was a 1966 experimental underground film directed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey, following the lives of young women at the Hotel Chelsea. It was also the inspiration for Nico's 1967 debut album, Chelsea Girl.

Yet most of that seems forgotten while the poster is still one of the most memorable images of the era. This particular poster was apparently hand-signed by Aldridge in 1970 and according to the seller, has a gallery guide price of £5,000. He is asking £4,500, which seems a bit rich for an eBay sale, but he will take an offer. You can always chance your arm.

Keep Your Teeth Clean 1930s print

Keep your teeth clean

It's a message that never loses its importance and must have been said in hundreds of different ways over the years, not least in this unusual 1930s Keep Your Teeth Clean print

The striking design looks quite contemporary but in fact was designed in 1938 in America to promote good oral hygiene. The poster has been selected from the images in the massive archive of the Library of Congress and reproduced by a company called Wallblank. Take a look at their selection of 'vintage' prints for more images in this line, alongside more familiar wartime designs and the See America range of posters.

The print costs between $14 and $24 depending on the size required.
