Art for All: British Posters for Transport

Art for All

If the Modern British Posters book and exhibition appealed to you, here's another book focusing on the topic, Art for All: British Posters for Transport

As the title makes implies, the emphasis here is on posters designed for London Underground and the railways, dating from 1908 when the publicity programme was started by London Underground. Its 208 pages feature many well known poster works, it also examines great examples of the work of McKnight Kauffer in more detail.

Offering a great overview of the topic, the book accompanies an exhibition at the Yale Center for British Art in America and uses work from their collection, alongside images from the London Transport Museum and National Railway Museum in York.

Coast seaside poster charity auction

Boscombe

Some new takes on the classic twentieth-century travel poster as seven contemporary artists were asked to design a seaside poster to be auctioned off for charity

Several Retro To Go favourites were among the artists asked to depict their favourite resort: Barbara Hulanicki extols the virtues of Brighton, Angie Lewin goes for Salthouse in Norfolk while Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway promote the merits of Boscombe, as pictured above. Although the style of 1930s British travel posters were an obvious starting point,  each artist has tackled the brief in their own distinctive way.

The auction started this morning (Thursday) on Ebay and concludes on the 16 May at 9pm. All proceeds raised go to Marine Conservation Society.

Lanvin Chocolate vintage poster

Lanvin poster

A sweet piece of vintage advertising pulled from the archive courtesy of this Lanvin Chocolate poster.

It comes from the archives of Lanvin Chocolat whose rich advertising history also features an 1970 advert featuring Salvador Dali declaring himself crazy for the product. This particular piece features Red Riding Hood feeding the wolf with the chocolate and apparently dates from 1961. Its bright colour and childish style is just as charming today.

The poster costs $14.99

Dreamline cruise canvas by Marten Rijnen

Cruise poster

If all the chaos caused by an erupting Icelandic volcano makes you long for a more glamorous age of travel, you may be interested in this Dreamline cruise canvas by Marten Rijnen

It's a completely contemporary design but obviously harks back to travel posters of the 1920s and 30s. The striking design is printed onto canvas measuring 60cm wide by 80cm high. For those less bothered about recent flight disruption, there's also a twin design featuring a plane.

It's sold by Made.com: we featured their Spoon coffee table last week. Like with the table, to get their low prices you have to wait for the product to be made after ordering – in this case a wait of 10 to 15 weeks.

The canvas costs £39.
