For sale: 1930s Art Deco apartment in Harrogate, Yorkshire

Harro1

I spent part of the weekend in Harrogate, checking out the sites and the property market, which currently includes this 1930s Art Deco apartment in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

Sat on the main Leeds Road into Harrogate, this was once a large Art Deco house until a developer decided two apartments were better than once house. Can't say I agree with the thinking, but at least said developer has maintained the classic exterior, the biggest selling point in my book.

For sale: Midcentury house in Little London near Longhope, Gloucestershire

London2

An interesting property that might appeal to lovers of the open country, this midcentury house in Little London, near Longhope, Gloucestershire.

Designed by the architect Gerry Jones for his own use back in the 1960s, the house doesn't look much from the outside, but it does sit on a 1/3 acre plot with spectacular views towards the Forest of Dean, which is certainly a massive selling point. But it's not the only one.

Park Hill 1960s housing estate in Sheffield – new pictures of redevelopment

Park1

It's something the locals either love or hate, but there's no denying that Park Hill in Sheffield is a modern-day icon. It's also undergoing a very modern renovation, courtesy of Urban Splash.

Described as 'streets in the sky' during its development in the late 50s and early 60s, the estate was initially popular in those post-war years, but with poor maintenance and an even poorer reputation as time passed, Park Hill's future was at a crossroads until Urban Splash stepped in with English Heritage, with idea of turning the now Grade II listed building into upmarket apartments, business  units and social housing.

For sale: 1960s-designed Strarretts house in Chislehurst, Kent

Strar1

We recently featured one Norman Starrett house in Chislehurst in Kent, but now another has gone on sale – this 1960s-designed Strarretts house in Chislehurst, Kent.

Yes, the same town and the same architect, but this 5/6-bedroom house is significantly more expensive than the last one. Sat on a large, sloping plot, the house was designed back in 1962 as a ‘luxury’ house and has been ‘sympathetically maintained’ by its current owner, which is one way of saying that it’s architecturally sound on the outside, but accommodates the modern era inside with an updated layout. In particular, the garage has been turned into a studio space.

For sale: 1960s-designed house in Greatwood, Chislehurst, Kent

Kent1

Designed by Norman Starrett back in 1962, this large townhouse in Greatwood, Chislehurst, Kent is still every bit the 1960s dream.

Greatwood is a small development of 19 houses, all designed by Starrett in what is called the 'H2 Design' and arranged in small groups of staggered terraces for privacy. The three-storey houses still scream the era and offer open plan living in a way modern homes can't and don't.

For sale: Apartment in 1930s modernist Taymount Grange block in Forest Hill, London SE23

Tay1

You can grab yourself an apartment in an interesting and lesser-known modernist gem in the capital, specifically a two-bedroom place on the third floor of Taymount Grange, Taymount Rise, London SE23.

Designed by George Bertram Carter as a 'master and servant' dual room set-up and built between 1935 and 1936, Taymount Grange still screams the era in both shape and detail, but it's also a clever design too, with plenty of natural light and fine views over the recently-refurbished communal gardens (which are part of the deal), not to mention over the city itself.
