eBay watch: Patrice Dupont-designed Philips 303 UFO portable record player with a low starting price

Ufo

I know this is something we have featured before, but I can't resist flagging up this Patrice Dupont-designed Philips 303 UFO portable record player, because the starting price is so low.

All too often, this icon of the 1970s space age era comes with a substantial 'Buy It Now' price, but this example can find its own price. As auctions always should. This UFO has the red cover and has apparently been checked by a 'specialist', with 'quite expensive, Germanium Transistors' replaced, so it's good to go for many more years. it also has a new battery compartment (works with battery or mains) and plays 'like a new one'.

A few minor usage marks, says the seller, but nothing more. Which is why it's worth talking about. Bidding stands at £1 right now.

Traditional Wooden Music Centre

823335_medium
How most people buy and listen to music may have moved on in recent years, but some of us are not ready to part with our vinyl collections. This Traditional Wooden Music Centre offers a good solution as it combines the best of the old and new.

It has a turntable that plays 33, 45 and 78rpm records, an AM/FM radio, a CD player and a USB port so you can plug in your new-fangled technology too. It is beautifully presented, housed in a walnut finished wooden case.

Like pretty much all of their stock, Past Times are selling it at a reduced price of £128 (previously £160).

Record Player Print by Anton deBris

Normal_Record_player_image_2
Whether you still love your vinyl or have gone completely digital, you still have to appreciate the style of vintage record players, such as the one in this Record Player Print by Belgian artist and designer Anton deBris.

The print has been created exclusively for S&T Prints and is limited to 100 copies. It has been created using aged red and blue ink for a vintage look and the record player is based on one from 1955. The print costs £55 unframed (but fits standard size frames).

eBay watch: 1970s Hornyphon 2623 portable record player

Horn1

Apologies for featuring another portable record player, but some great designs keep cropping up – which this Hornyphon 2623 portable record player is.

Let's look at the design first, which offers the three-speed record deck, contras for balance, tone and volume and a choice of battery and mains power. Oh yes – and those cool dimpled speakers, which provide stereo sound, then pack back into the deck when not in use, so you can carry it all round like a small briefcase. Very stylish. See an image of that over the page.

Condition? According to the seller, it's 'hardly used' and 'very well-tended', with 'a very few fine and slight scratches on the outside, caused by storage'. Still some time to go, £1 is the current bid price.

eBay watch: 1970s Schneider space age portable record player

Sch2

Yes, I know – we feature a lot of portable record players. But that's because they always prove very popular and in many circumstances, they offer up some great period design. This Schneider portable record player certainly doesn't disappoint on that score.

Described by the seller as 'one of the coolest and most desirable' portable players, as as well 'a really rare and hard-to-find object', it's a mains-powered player than spins vinyl at 33, 45 and 78rpm, offers better than expected sound and of course, has those great space age stereo speakers. It's also been featured in L'Utopie du Tout Plastique, the benchmark of cool space age design.

eBay watch: Dieter Rams-designed Braun Atelier-1 audio system

Atelier

If, like us, you happen to be a fan of Deiter Rams' designs, you might well fancy making a bid on the Braun Atelier-1 audio system.

It's a classic late 1950s audio system, designed by Dieter Rams and Hans Gugelot and offering stylish looks as well as a four-speed record player and three-band radio in a case that mixes cream white metal with ash-veneer wooden sides.

It's described as being in 'very good', but does need a new needle to work. If that is good enough for you, it's available on a 'Buy It Now' for 399 Euros. The seller also has some matching speakers on offer too. Check them out here.
