Contemporary Days Film Screening

Design_onscreen
If you failed to make it to Chichester for the Robin and Lucienne Day Exhibition featued in these pages earlier this year all is not lost.

The exhibition is currently to be found in Ealing, at the Pitzhanger Manor Museum, where it will remain until the 4th of September. As part of the exhibition there will also be a screening of the film, Contemporary Days: The Designs of Lucienne and Robin Day, which traces the careers of the influential husband and wife designers from the 1930's through to the present.

The screening takes place on Thursday August 25th at 7.30pm – it's free to attend; simply call 020 8567 1227 to book your place.

eBay watch: 1970s Robin Day Polo Chair

Polo

It's incorrectly listed (by title), which might account for this Robin Day Polo Chair still being at its starting price of under £1, as opposed to something nearer the official £49 price point.

It's an early '70s design classic, albeit a functional one and one with a low price point. That's because this indoor/outdoor polypropylene, ergonomically-correct chair was designed for general use, not for showing off.

It was reissued on 2000, this being one of those reissues. The seller has 13 available in white and right now, the price is at 99 pence. So a possible bargain, that's for sure.

Robin Day for Hille 1960s space age coffee table

Hille

Nice bit of space age design – and not something you see all that often – this Robin Day for Hille 1960s space age coffee table.

We have featured an armchair that the designer did in a similar style, also made by Daty for Hille. This is the perfect side table for it, a coffee table with storage in the centre if you remove the central disc.

It's described as being in 'very good vintage condition', with two very small cigarette burns that are 'only noticeable on close inspection'. £9.99 is the current price.

Habitat Days Forum armchair and sofas by Robin Day

Forum

We were very sad to hear of the death of Robin Day, aged 95, last week. We did think about doing a tribute, but in truth, we've been a tribute site to Robin Day's designs pretty much since the day started – everything from the classic Polo Chair to more eccentric designs like the 4-4000 chair for Hille, now long gone, but often seen on eBay. But after a check through our records, we realised we haven't featured one of his most recognisable designs – the Habitat Days Forum armchair and sofas.

Yes, if you've been in Habitat in the past few years, you'll have seen this impressive midcentury-inspired design. It's available as an armchair or as a two, three or four-seater sofa, all with that oak frame (stained as ash or walnut) and with a choice of colours for the Italian leather upholstery. All of that stands on slim chrome legs.

A very stylish design and a tribute to the enduring appeal of Robin Day. It sells from £1,100 for the armchair or £1,650 for the sofa. If you happen to be in the Manchester area, here's a tip – you might find them heavily discounted at the Habitat clearance store there.

Robin Day dining chair back as part of Habitat’s ‘Back by Popular Demand’

Day chair

Aspects of Habitat's new collection may look more than a little familiar. That's because they're featuring several items that are 'back by popular demand' – some of the most-requested products from its retail history now back on sale. This ranges from the chicken brick oven to the more iconic Robin Day dining chair pictured.

The chair is sometimes known as the 675 chair, originally designed by Day for Hille in the 1950s before Habitat began manufacturing it a few decades later. It's an attractive juxtaposition of material – from the tubular steel frame to the oak or walnut veneer back, topped off with a black or cream leather seating pad. Perfect for sitting back in as you await your chicken brick cooked tandoori.

The chair costs £200.
