1950s apple-patterned notebook from V&A Shop

Joyce apples

This apple-patterned notebook from the V&A Shop is a pretty piece of stationery as it stands and is made more remarkable once you've realised it's adapted from a dress fabric design from the 1950s. 

The pattern is part of the vast archives of the V&A Museum and, in this case, it's drawn from the work of Joyce Badrocke. She was one of the textile designers for Horrockses Fashions, who inspired a range at the V&A shop earlier this year. This design is every bit as fresh and colourful as you'd expect from their dresses and works well on this A5 notebook. 

There's also a smaller notebook available that uses a pattern featuring rabbits, based on one of Badrocke's designs for children.  

The notebook costs £3.25.

Following in the footsteps of H&M, another high street favourite has launched a dedicated online store – this time Paperchase. Making it easy to browse their complete ranges, it's a great opportunity to unearth some gems such as their Folk Trees collection. 

If you like the style of Sanna Annukka this collection is bound to appeal. The range – which includes notebooks, binders, albums, and storage boxes – is covered with folk-style emblems, given a contemporary treatment by the use of bold colours. 

This unusual design is priced reasonably too, ranging from £2.75 for a folder up to £6.75 for the shoebox pictured above.

Got something to say that could do with a dash of retro style? Check out the message tags made by A Wilderness For You and Me. 

The world of Australian based designer and illustrator Nyssa Skoyi, the tags are decorated with images cut from old books and magazines, set against colourful, period patterns. The other side of the tag contains a space for your message. The tags are sold in sets of two and each set has an evocative name such as 'The Pilot's Daughter' or 'Misses Air Hostesses'; the set illustrated is called 'Children of the 60s'. They certainly a offer a more stylish option than email to get a message across.
