Starburst Embellished Vest from Miss Selfridge

Starburstvest

When perfecting the pre-war aesthetic in fashion, it's all about perfecting the line between luxury and subtlety, a look exemplified by the flapper trend of the twenties and thirties. This Starburst Embellished Vest from Miss Selfridge provides a modern look back at the era, with plenty of vintage inspired details.

The beading and embellishment taps into the unbridled luxury of the decadent twenties, without falling for tackiness thanks to the muted colour palette throughout. The loose fit of the top allows for a small amount of revealing flesh, while maintaining the boyish figure effect that characterised much flapper fashion.

It's available now from Miss Selfridge for £45.

For sale: 1930s five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Dacre1

For some years, I presumed all the better art deco-styled houses were in the south of Great Britain. But of late, we've found some cracking properties 'up north', including this five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

It's an incredibly imposing house. Built back in 1937, it nestles into woodland, overlooking the West Yorkshire countryside and its own grounds, with that 1930s exterior looking faithful to the original design. That's not the case inside.

For sale: 1930s art deco-style house in Greenhill, Weymouth in Dorset

Weymouth1

Not an obvious one from the outside, but take a look inside this 1930s art deco-style house in Greenhill, Weymouth in Dorset and you'll see why we love it. The views aren't bad from the windows either.

Situated in a conservation area, the house is a mix of the old and the new – real contrasts too. The entrance hall is 'reminiscent of a 1930s Parisian hotel interior', complete with original parquet flooring and panelled walls with diamond-shaped insets. The staircase is original too, with rhomboid box panelling and detailed balustrading, while some of the rooms look straight out of the 1930s, contrasting sharply with a very modern fitted kitchen.

Art deco house by the seaside? We have one right here, this quirky Robert Messenger & Son-designed four-bedroom art deco house in Birchington, Kent.

Felt Cloche Hat from J by Jasper Conran

Clocheconran

While fifties and sixties style will always have a dedicated following, it's always worth a look when mainstream fashion offers alternative retro influences on the high street. This Felt Cloche Hat from J by Jasper Conran is a great choice for a less seen twenties or thirties look.

The basic black is always a hit for 20s styles, allowing the intricate ruffled detailing to remain subtle. The cloche shape is perfectly retro, while the use of a black felt fabric keeps true to the vintage inspiration itself.

It's available now from Debenhams for £20.

For sale: The House That Jack Built 1930s art deco house in Louth, Lincolnshire

Lincoln1

Designed in 1931, The House That Jack Built was actually built by Thomas Dalgleish McLean, the winner of a competition to create 'a married man's ideal of a home' and shown off at the Ideal Home exhibition prior to its construction. Almost 80 years on and it's still a house that can turn heads. If it turns yours, this impressive property is on the market right now.

You'll find it in hillside in Louth, 26 miles from Lincoln, with 'panoramic' views of the town from the three-storey property. Externally, you could be stepping back in time, but like most deco houses in the UK, the interior has been made, for better or worse, into something more in keeping with the modern era.
