Once Upon a Time wallpaper by Tres Tintas

Once-Upon-A-Time-wallpaper

A contemporary kid's wallpaper, with a nostalgic 1950s look, this Once Upon a Time wallpaper by Tres Tintas is sure to capture your child's imagination.

The wallpaper is covered with the kind of imagery that could have come straight out of a kid's storybook: robots and spacemen mingle with zebras, carousel horses and tea cups. It's definitely a design that looks backwards for its subject matter and illustrative style.

The retro look is enhanced by the colour scheme: the paper is available with the blue background shown, or a light taupe.

It costs £65 a roll.

James wallpaper by Sandberg

Sandberg james
This James wallpaper is another treat from Sandberg whose Lilly design we showed you last week. While that was aimed for a kid's bedroom, this is a design that will appeal to well-travelled adults.

The paper is covered with a depiction of old-fashioned travel labels from around the world. The fact that Sandberg are Swedish influences the selection slightly but look closely and you'll see stamps from Vienna, New York and Holland too, to name but a few.

The paper is available in a variety of colourways – I think this yellow/gray combination works well with the nostalgic feel of the image.

The paper costs £50 a roll.

Lilly Wallpaper

  Lillywallpaper

The Lilly Wallpaper by Sandberg is a design that will have equal appeal to children and their design-conscious parents.

The wallpaper features an imaginative landscape of hills, trees and trains in a Scandinavian folk art style, designed by Lotta Kvist. It is available in pink/turquoise, brown/green or green/yellow. Sandberg use old-fashioned processes to make their wallpapers, runing their own wallpaper machines at slower speeds than other wallpaper manufacturers and hand-painting the edges of their wallpaper. The paper costs just under £79 per roll. There is also a fabric in the same pattern available, priced £51.61 per metre.

Order online from the Scandinavian Design Center.

V&A Pattern books: Pop Patterns

Pop patterns
Inspired by bright, colourful and fun patterns? We advise checking out Pop Patterns, the latest in the V&A Pattern series which we featured on its launch a couple of years ago.

Like those books, it features 65 different patterns drawn from the archives of the V&A, alongside an introduction from one of the museum's curators. This collection, introduced by Oriole Cullen, pulls together images from the 1960s and early 70s that show the influence of Pop Art on British wallpaper and fabric design. There are patterns by the likes of Mr Freedom, The Fool and Zandra Rhodes and, my personal favourite, a dress fabric called 'Haircut? Yes Please' by Marc Foster and Michael Yates which features illustrations of every kind of men's haircuts, ranging from the classic crewcut to the forward brush and flat top.

Packed full of unusual imagery, the book is priced £7.99, but is currently available for £6.39 on Amazon

Festival of Britain shop at Culture Label

Fest

If you happen to have missed it, this week is 60 years since the iconic Festival of Britain took place in London. To mark this milestone, arty online shopping portal Culture Label has set up a Festival of Britain store, packed with products relating to the event.

In truth, some are more relevant than others, although all are worth a browse. Our favourite is undoubtedly the superb Southbank Centre x Lizzie Allen Festival of Britain Wallpaper. It's a bespoke wallpaper, made in very small runs and using traditional, hand crafted processes, with this particular design celebrating the energy and vigour of the Festival of Britain, featuring both participants and the Southbank itself.

Unlikely to work for a whole room (not least, because of cost), it would look superb as a feature wall. Each roll is 10m long and sells for £370.

Barneby Gates Typecast wallpaper

Barneby-gates-typecase-wallpaper-vintage-gold-5339-p

Barneby Gates seem to be the people of the moment to go to for an unusual wallpaper. You may remember their promenade wallpaper which mixed up fashions of different eras: they've now applied the same principle to typography with their Typecast wallpaper.

The paper is covered with a range of vintage fonts, starting at heavy wooden block prints and go through to graffiti type lettering. The ornate feel is enhanced by the use of gold prints. As an added twist, there's apparently a hidden message in the paper – you can't tell from the image, so you'll have a buy a roll if you want to find out what it says.

The paper costs £75 a roll.
