eBay watch: 1950s midcentury-style wooden cabinet

50s

So far, this 1950s midcentury-style wooden cabinet is something of a steal. Here's hoping that's the case when the auction ends.

It's not a designer piece, but it is an interesting design, with those four angles legs, two drawers and a pull-down lower section for extra storage.

No mention of the kind of wood here, but the condition is described as 'very good' with 'light wear' on the top section. Want it? Right now, it's at just £9. Check out the seller's other items too, plenty of other pieces from a similar era too.

Shipping Forecast – Gale Warning Letterpress Print by John Christopher

Sf_lgred_bigbest
Artist John Christopher uses vintage wood and metal type to create unique letterpress prints including this one, part of his acclaimed Shipping Forecast project.

As well as using traditional painstaking methods which display tiny imperfections in the type and make each print unique; Gale Warning commemorates a significant event in British modern history: the great storm of 1987. Visually documenting the predicted wind-force, direction and air pressure of that memorable night, this work is hand-printed on to four separate sheets which have a total length of 2.1 metres.

The print costs £400 unframed and you can buy it from Unlimited Editions here

AR001 chair from Assembly Room

AR001_08
Another contemporary design that looks to the past, this AR001 chair from Assembly Room looks to the utilitarian designs of the 1950s.

The straight lines of the seat contrast with the splayed wooden feet of the chair, creating a striking, retro, and, most importantly, an inviting bit of seating. The chair is upholstered in pure new wool, available in a wide range of colours.

Assembly Room is the work of Peter Wall and Cathy Spooner who have produced a small and perfectly formed range of furniture: you may want to check out AR006 too – that's the table pictured alongside the chair.

Prices for the chair start at £995.

Retro sofa from Bark Furniture

Bark sofa

A classic design that's hand-made from the materials of your choosing – if you're willing to pay a bit more than high street for your seating it would certainly be worth you checking out this retro sofa from Bark Furniture.

Bark furniture is the Cornwall based business of husband and wife team, Jonathan Walter and Lakshmi Bhaskaran. All their furniture is made by hand to order, so you get a say in the finished look. This mid-century style sofa, for example, is available as either a two- or three-seater number, both options sharing those angled lines and paired back look. You get a choice of four different hardwoods for your frame and a variety of upholstery options.

Of course, this sofa comes with a price tag to match this relative freedom and the craftsmanship involved. Prices start at £1360 for a maple wood two-seater and, don't forget, you'll need to pay for your upholstery too.

Areaware Alarm Dock by Jonas Damon – turn your iPhone into a flip-style clock

Areaware

Interesting idea that mixes the past with the present – the Areaware Alarm Dock.

It looks like a vintage-style flip (or early digital) clock, but it's actually a beech wood dock for an iPhone. Slide your phone into the front and it becomes a clock, charging overnight too. That clock display comes from a flip clock app.

Available to pre-order directly, $39.99 is the price.

Ercol plank table from The Conran Shop

Plank table
We've highlighted The Conran Shop's Well Considered range before, intended to be a more affordable line of products. This 1950s designed plank table is now available as part of the range.

This table was actually designed back in 1956 by Lucian R. Ercolani and is still manufactured by Ercol. It's a very simple design with that plank-like elm top and splayed beech legs which fits six people. Available in three colours: take your pick from the natural look or a more striking black or red.

It's priced at – while not budget, a more affordable than your average Conran Shop item – £595.
