Retro Retreat: Boundary, London

Boundary_StyleMag_Eileen_Gray_071

Boundary is the latest venture from design guru Terence Conran. Based in a converted Victorian warehouse in London’s Shoreditch, the building includes a restaurant, roof top bar and private dining areas, but what is of interest to us are the hotel rooms.

Boundary has 12 bedrooms that have been individually designed based on iconic designers or significant design movements. These includes rooms inspired by Ellen Gray (pictured above), Charles and Ray Eames, Bauhaus, Shaker and Scandinavian styles. Prices start from £140 depending on which day of the week you want to stay. Sadly, they cannot guarantee a certain room at the time of booking, but all of the rooms look good so it should be worth the gamble.

Vintage-style cardboard luggage at Manufactum

Card_case1

Cardboard you ask? No, this isn't going to rot away after a quichk shower, it's actually hard-wearing if you produce it the right way. And as this vintage-style cardboard luggage at Manufactum has been produced in the Czech Republic for over 80 years, we can assume it comes with an excellent reputation.

Described as 'sturdy as anything', the suitcases have studded side-pieces are studded, corners and edges that are metal-reinforced, wooden strips on the outside for added stability, and the larger cases have solid wooden frames on the inside. If that's not enough, the locks and handles are made of steel, with an inner lining of paper. One other vital ingredient too – they look unbelievably hip.

Prices vary depending on the size of case required, but start at a very reasonable £22.50 for a black or red finish. Also, check out over the page for a really stylish hat box made in the same style by the same people – that will set you back just £24.50.

Reissue of The Shell Country Alphabet

Shell country alphabet

Another reissue of a 60s title, The Shell Country Alphabet taps into the nostalgia for books full of innocent pursuits and things to do and is packaged with a suitably retro cover. However, unlike some of the titles that are around, as its subtitle 'From Apple Trees to Stone Circles: how to understand the countryside' suggests it's a far reaching and thoughtful book. Over 448 pages it covers everything you need to know about the British countryside, from clouds and rainbows to mazes and ha-has.

The author, Geoffrey Grigson, was originally a poet and proves an expert guide. The book has been slightly updated from the 1966 original text with an introduction from his daughter Sophie Grigson (the cookery writer) and some new further reading suggestions. For just £12 on Amazon, it's a fascinating thing to dip in and out of, even if the closest you ever get to the countryside is your garden.

Ella Doran Routemaster coasters

Routemaster coasters

Though decommissioned in 2005, the Routemaster remains one an iconic symbol of London. Transport for London have recognised this and asked Ella Doran to create a range of products around the bus, including this set of four Routemaster coasters

For those who travelled on the bus, the images of the bell and the mirror featured on two of the coasters will be familiar sites and the third shows a close-up of the old logo of route 38, illustratrating why it was known as the 'love bus'. The last coaster features a montage of all these shots with several others. Transport enthusiasts may be pleased to hear that, at £13.70 for the set, they cost 10p less than a current weekly London bus pass.

London and Paris tea towels from Lazy Oaf

Lazy Oaf teatowels

Lazy Oaf are usually known for their bold cartoon like t-shirts so these London and Paris tea towel are an unexpected but pleasant surprise. The designs show key tourist attractions of both cities, the Eiffel Tower for Paris and Big Ben for London, that are illustrated with a pretty floral design and retro font. Even though they are a British company, there seems to be a slight bias towards the French capital: while London is shown with rain and a grey backdrop, Paris is bright pink and decorated with flowers.

They cost £8.50 each and, like it says on the towels, they can only enhance a lovely home.
