Retro Retreat: East German-themed Ostel Hotel in Berlin

Eastgermany

Angry that you can’t live out your Harry Palmer fantasy now that the Berlin Wall has come down? No problem – you can take part in your very own Funeral In Berlin by bookng into the Ostel Hotel.

The Ostel Hotel lets you party like it’s not quite 1989. Based in the Mitte district, the Ostel gives you a glimpse of the old east, with a stay in a room that’s fitted out with original GDR furniture and there’s a free city tour in a Trabant car thrown in. There’s even themed rooms, including the ‘holiday camp’ room, a pre-fabricated apartment or for real luxury, the Stasi suite.

But don’t worry – all the mattresses, bed linen and plumbing are completely modern. Rooms start from a very affordable 35 Euros.

Orla Kiely retro tents

Orla_tents

You may remember the Orla Kiely wind-up radio from a few days back. Well, as part of that same camping range, there’s also these rather cool Orla Kiely retro tents.

The Orla Kiely Dome Tent will fit three people under its double skin, has a flysheet with double seams, storage pockets and is easy pitch, with all the poles being colour-coded. It even has a retro carry case. The Orla Kiely Teepee Tent is quick pitch, with an integral groundsheet and single steel pole. Once up, that will hold six people.

Both are available now only from Millets, priced at £59.99 for the Dome Tent and £99.99 for the Teepee Tent.

Samsonite’s vintage Fashionaire luggage collection returns

Samsonite_luggage

Samsonite has recently reissued its Fashionaire luggage collection, first seen in the airport lounges back in 1968.

The designs in the 2007 version differ from the originals and include extra pieces, but are in keeping with the look and feel. The full collection packs in a suitcase, wheeled upright case, duffle bag, shoulder pouch, beauty case, shopping bag, umbrella, scarf, wallet and keyhanger. There’s also two colour schemes to choose from – white or black background.

Above are the suitcase and beauty case. The suitcase is a throwback to a time before luggage had wheels and is extremely limited – just 600 made for the re-launch. It sells for $565 (around £285). The beauty case is limited to 2500 worldwide and houses an "organised" interior, with two removable pouches and elastic loops for organising bottles. That retails for $315 (around £160).

Comic book suitcases and travel bag

Comic_luggage

One thing is for sure – you’ll stand out at the airport carrying these comic book suitcases and the matching travel bag.

Both are covered entirely in a design featuring an old Spanish comic book. The suitcases come in two sizes, 50 x 35 x 20cm and 44 x 28 x 17cm, both featuring internal and external zipped pockets and handles to drag them around. They’re priced at £55 and £45 respectively.

The canvas shoulder bag has a hard bottom and studs, internal and external pockets and an adjustable strap. You can pick that up for £20.

Globetrotter Domino limited edition vintage luggage

20ltd_luggage We have covered Globetrotter luggage previously – it’s a design classic and the best you can buy. Past users have included Winston Churchill and Sir Edmund Hilary (who used them on his Everest expedition), while current users include The Queen. In fact, even James Bond uses Globetrotter in the original Ian Fleming novels.

It might not be cheap, but it is exclusive. And if you want to be even more exclusive, you need to own this Globetrotter Domino limited edition vintage luggage. There’s just 20 of them being made, 10 of the 30-inch suitcases and 10 of the 21-inch trolley cases. In black with chrome detailing, they consist of an ash wood frame that’s covered with a super-strength vulcan fibre material – with a composition that’s a company secret.

If you want one, they retail for £850 and £670 respectively. And they’re likely to sell out quickly.
