Titanic DNA watch – made from bits of the old ship

Titanic_watch

95 years on and the fascination with the Titanic is still as strong as ever. So picking up the Titanic DNA watch from Roamine Gerome could be a shrewd – if slightly morbid – investment.

It’s made of steel salvaged from the hull of the sunken ship, which has been sitting on the sea floor off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador for the past 95 years. You can choose different materials for the watch case, from the gold finish (left) to the extremely rusted steel (right). And the face is crafted from pieces of coal that were still loaded in the ship’s furnace, with the rest of the watch design mimicing the gauges and hatches aboard the Titanic.

Obviously no-one is going to dive down and grab you bits of the boat on the cheap, so this limited edition watch (2,012 pieces) has a hefty price tag. How does $152,435 (£80,000) grab you?

Stonehenge Watch

Stone_henge_watch

There’s perhaps nothing more retro than going back to the stone age – and you can go back that far with the Stonehenge Watch.

It uses the same technology as the original Stonehenge – using the power of the sun with the ‘stones’ to tell the time. Once you’ve mastered how that works, you can check if it works against the ‘real’ watch built into the other side.

Sold complete with chain, compass and instructions, it retails for $34.9 (around £18).

Charles and Ray Eames Collage watch

Eames_collage Another quirky timepiece, this time the Charles and Ray Eames Collage watch.

Why Eames? Well, the face on this Acme-made watch based on an Eames design – certified by the Eames Office too, just in case you need reasurance. Other than that, it’s a pretty straightforward watch with a 1.37-inch face, black leather strap (white and orange plastic also available) and with a presentation box to keep it in.

Limited edition and getting more scarce all the time, it retails for $135 (around £70).

Fossil 70s-style Anadigi watch

Fossil_anadigi I’m not sure what, but there’s someting very appealing about this Fossil Anadigi watch.

Maybe it’s the faux wood face, maybe it’s the throwback looks of the display (I’m sure I used to have a vintage one just like it) or maybe it’s the way the whole things sits together. Whataver it is, this stainless steel watch with leather strap should keep you on time with both analogue and digital display. And if you go near water, it’s also resistant to 50m.

I can’t find it on sale in the UK, but in the US it sells for $75, which is a very reasonable £38. If brown isn’t you, other colour combinations are available.

Breil’s Monaco-like Duo watch

Briel_tag Does this timepiece remind you of something? It reminds me quite distinctly of the classic TAG Heuer ‘Steve McQueen Monaco watch – except this Breil Duo chronograph is just a fraction of the price.

What you get for your money os a quartz chronograph in a stainless steel casing, with luminous hands and two-colour leather strap. And a watch that’s very stylish and punches above its price tag.

That price is around £160.

Tag Heuer updates classic Monaco Vintage in black

Monaco_vintage_black We have featured the TAG Heuer "Steve McQueen" Monaco watch previously, but there’s a new version on the market we think looks even sharper – the TAG Heuer Monaco Vintage in black.

Technically, it’s the same – a copy of the world’s first square-cased chronograph, designed to match McQueen’s suit in the movie Le Mans, which itself was a replica of the one worn by the first driver sponsored by TAG Heuer  – Jo Siffert. And it was the first watch with a microrotor for automatic rewinding – the revolutionary “Chronomatic Calibre 11.”

This new vintage version has black dial with orange and blue stripes, vintage "Gulf" logo and matching black alligator strap with orange stitching. A colour scheme paying tribute to the Porsche-Gulf 917K car in the movie. It’s a limited edition of 4,000 pieces – and if you want one, you’ll have to pay £2,500.
