Almost 40 years and the Up5 armchair by B&B Italia is still years ahead of the game.
Designed in 1969 by avant garde Italian architect Gaetano Pesce, it was originally intended as a form of flat pack furniture, with the vacuum-packed item would spring to life when the package was opened.
These days, the Up5 and its ball-shaped Ottoman are made from shaped polyurethane foam, then covered in a fabric of your choice, selling for a very non-flatpack price of £1,500 upwards. But if you want something a bit cheaper, other items in the Up range start at £300.
