Here’s a tip for you – if you want some cool art on your wall for not a lot of cash, hunt around for some of the posters advertising the Munich Olympics in 1972.
The organisers cleverly approached the pick of contemporary artists of the era to produce interesting artwork for the games, using the posters in shops, on bus stops – just about anywhere really. If you want a comparison, think Banksy doing posters for the London Olympics right now.
As you would imagine, many of these were destroyed, but with so many around, you can still pick up originals cheaply. In fact, one of the most rare is on eBay right now – Kraft Und Nature from Victor Vasarely. Printed on card-like paper (like a silkscreen print) with the Olympic logo underneath, it is currently selling for £31 with a couple of days left. Which is a serious bargain.
Stunning as that image is, I’m not sure it’s part of the ‘art’ series, all of which had “Olympische Spiele Munchen 1972”, the Olympic rings and a B&W ‘op-art’-type logo along the bottom.
