Yes, it’s another Nelson design, but with a design as stylish as the George Nelson Spindle wall clock, it’s hard to ignore it.
Designed in 1957 by Nelson, this midcentury gem must have caused quite a stir when it landed. After all, the modernism of the mid-20th century was still a fairly new concept and something like this, so far out of the mainstream, must have had shoppers scratching their heads in confusion.
Fast forward six decades and we can see how forward-thinking this piece of design actually is. In fact, it still looks out of sync with most high street design even now.
The clock mixes lacquered wood for the turned spindles and metal for ther focal point in the middle, with some geometric hands finishing things off. Well, not quite. There is also a high-end quartz mechanism for accuracy.
The result? Something that’s both stylish and practical and a piece of design that’s an investment and likely outlive all of us.
Available online, it sells for around £339.
