If you've already worked your way through the 500 plus pages of The Design Book, the Great Designs book promises you more examples of classic design.
Published by DK, like most of their books it takes a very visually led approach, using examples drawn from the collection of the Smithsonian collection in the States. It also covers a slightly narrower period to The Design Book, starting from the second half of the 19th century and going up to today.
The book covers products – everything from bubble chairs to the Citroen DS, and Marcel Breuer's 1920s Wassily chair, as shown on the jacket – and some of the most famous designers and design schools, with the aim of proving its tag line, "the world's best design explored and explained". It uses a hefty 256 pages in pursuit of this aim, providing lovers of design with plenty of inspiration.
