It was really frustrating the Muji never offered its Thonet collaboration to the whole of the UK, as these affordable updates of classics really looked good and were well priced. Saying that, they didn't look quite as cool as the original pieces – like the Thonet S285 Desk.
It's an amazing design, primarily because this desk dates back to 1935, the work of Marcel Breuer. It's a testament to him too, with the look of this piece hardly dating at all. It looks every bit the modern piece, not something that's approaching 80 years of age.
The tabletop and storage parts of the desk are made of lacquered ash wood,. sitting within the trademark tubular steel and chrome you would expect from Thonet. There's a lot going on here, but it is still very much a minimalist design.
An icon rarely comes cheap and this one, despite being in the sale right now, is still in the 'investment piece' category. £3,094.85 to be precise.
