There is a very good reason why the Dennis Stock: James Dean book has been reissued by Thames and Hudson. The friendship between the two men is the basis of a new film.
That film is called ‘Life’ (the website is here) and follows Dennis Stock from the Magnum Photos Agency on an assignment to photograph ‘rising star’ James Dean, prior to the release of East of Eden, showing how the friendship developed between the two as they travelled around the US.
A film can tell a story, but only the camera of Dennis Stock can document it. Oh yes, a book containing the photos can too. That’s what you can get from today, with Thames & Hudson reissuing the 144-page hardback book. Within those pages you’ll find some iconic shots of Dean with family and friends and alone, with locations ranging from the frozen fields of Indiana to a rainy day in Manhattan. Yes, that photo. Dennis Stock's original accompanying text is here too, along with a later introduction by Joe Hyams.
If you have an interest in James Dean, it’s probably a must-have or one for the Christmas list. You can order it from Amazon for £19.96.
