We seem to be on a bit of a roll with kitsch finds today. And it doesn’t get much ‘kitsch-ier’ than this restored 1950s boat-shaped cocktail bar.
Once upon a time, you could pick these things up quite cheaply at backstreet junk shops. No one really want one. But times change and these boat bars are quite sought after these days in retro homes. So if you see one, perhaps it’s an idea to pick it up.
If you don’t see one and fancy investing in a restored model, look no further. This particular bar has a grained formica top, a display area with the original, thick curved glass front below it, two side porthole viewing windows and a working light within, operating by a push switch on the side. Two large storage compartments under the lit display and the supporting / removable legs finish things off.
According to the seller, the bar is in ‘fantastic condition’ having been sympathetically restored to its original glory. Note that all parts and components are original to the bar, even the netted hanging sea ball’s and the rubber ring around the anchor.
That kind of originality does come at a price though. This one is up at £400. More images and details on the listing.
