We have featured the standard cases in the past, but this Horace Panter-designed GPO 12-inch vinyl case is a limited edition.
As you probably know, Horace Panter is the bass player in The Specials as well as a noted artist in his own right. In the second capacity, he has produced a design for this limited edition case, which will launch as part of HMV’s Vinyl Week in 2017 and in conjunction with Harrogate’s RedHouse Originals Gallery.
Speaking about the box, Horace said: ‘Obviously, I was delighted to be asked to design a cover for a GPO record box (I happen to own one of their plain ones)… something akin to a busman’s holiday for me; that combination of art and music that informs most of my work. The design is under way… it will be colourful is all I can say at this point.’
Well, you don’t have to wonder about the end result, as the images have just landed. A bold design in blue, it features some retro ‘Record Town’ signage and some vinyl with the GPO logo in the centre. A signature in the lid too.
The box is designed to hold 30-35 LPs and will initially be sold exclusively through HMV. If you want one, you can pre-order one now, with the case selling for £59.99.
