Everything you wanted to know about the former state and more is in The East German Handbook, which is published by Taschen.
This hefty volume (800 pages) features items from the collection of the Wende Museum in Los Angeles, California. Around 2,000 items in total, covering the full spectrum of art, archives, and artifacts from socialist East Germany. Official symbols, everyday items as well as both mass-produced and handmade pieces.
Accompanying these remnants of the country are texts about all aspects of life, along with several dozen images of everyday life and public events from the most famous GDR photographers.
Hopefully the images here give you an idea of just what to expect. The text is in both English and German and the book, which is overseen by Justinian Jampol, has a flexicover and is clothbound with a ribbon bookmark.
One downside though. The book isn’t actually released until 26th December, which obviously means it isn’t going to feature in anyone’s Christmas stocking. But it will be a nice thing to receive in the post in the holiday period just after.
If you want to pre-order, it sells for £29.99.
It would be AMAZING if this also included the cyillic script translation as well for this book, along with german!
