We are bringing back the Retro Rooms feature, kicking off with wonderful 1950s-inspired kitchen, courtesy of Helen in London.
You might be aware of Helen, as she’s the person behind the wonderful 20th Century Cloth, although there probably isn’t much of a call for midcentury fabrics and cushions in this particular room. But if you want them for any other room, do check out that site.
What it does have is a selection of English Rose units, which were fitted 22 years ago. Apparently the were advertised in ‘Loot’ after being ripped out of a 1950s bungalow, along with an original 1950s powder blue bathroom suite. Helen paid £400 for the lot. Yes, you have our permission to cry.
The kitchen units were sandblasted and resprayed, with the worktops made using Formica Boomerang laminate. The original taps were re-chromed and the handles changed, as the original ones didn’t match the colour scheme.
The table and chairs are original, bought from London based ‘Out Of Time’. There chairs were re-covered after tracking down a UK supplier of the original Naugahyde vinyl.
All modern appliances elsewhere as you might expect,, but lots of other vintage bits ’n’ pieces, such as juicers, Kromex tea and coffee canisters and so on.
“If we ever move house we will have to take it all with us – I love it and could never leave it!”
We aren’t surprised. It looks amazing.
Thanks to Helen and if you want to share any part of your house with us, do drop us a line and we’ll be back in touch. Oh and if you want an English Rose kitchen, they do come up on eBay.
