These really are mini works of art. But the midcentury modern-inspired birdhouses by Sourgrassbuilt are very practical pieces too. For your feathered friends anyway.
All the designs are created by Californian Douglas Barnhard, who obviously has an eye for detail and a love of the subject matter. As you might have worked out, all are influenced by architecture of the mid-20th century, not least the Eichler houses prominent in his home state.
I love them all. But I have picked out a few of our favourites, which hopefully will appeal to you too. Above is the Eichler-inspired Sunset Modern, while below you will find the Kauai House, which is based on Hawaiian architecture, the Sunnyvale (also an Eichler-inspired build) and the Highlands, which is also based on Californian MCM.
But there are more options if you want to check out the full range. 15 in total, plus the option of getting a custom birdhouse made if you have seen a midcentury modern property that might miniaturise and translate into something for the garden.
Whatever you go for, each one is obviously the result of a lot of hard work and constructed with premium materials. The Sunnyvale below, for example, is made with bamboo wood, a high end orange laminate and with viewing windows accented with geometric metal screens. There is a metal birdseed container on the deck as a lovely finishing touch.
If you want to treat your local wildlife or just want to brighten up the garden, the houses are available online right now, with prices starting at $169.99. Not cheap, that’s for sure. But it might be an affordable way to get some midcentury modern architecture in your life.
