It has the hint of a midcentury classic, but the Huxley retro ceiling light at John Lewis is a recent design, would you believe.
That original design is, of course, the classic Sputnik light. But this certainly isn’t a Sputnik light fitting. Just a play on the design and the original concept, with a hint of the modern era thrown in for good measure.
It does use a similar design principle, but it would be rare to see a Sputnik with a brass frame. They generally come in a chrome finish. But the brass finish is the dominant force here, for the central pole, the ball at the bottom and the arms that shoot off at various angles.
Each of the six arms holds smoke grey glass globe shades and for me, the globes and the colour of them really do help to set this light fitting apart from some of the competition.
As you might expect of John Lewis, the price is neither cheaper or overly expensive. It’s a ‘John Lewis’ price, which in this case is £210. There is a table lamp and floor lamp in the series too if you like it but want something at ground level. But for me, the ceiling light is where the design works best.
