I know, this looks very familiar and for good reason. But this is listed as a copper mushroom table lamp at TK Maxx.
Of course, this looks like a design classic. In fact, it looks pretty much exactly like that design classic.
That lighting classic is a lamp I featured as far back as 2009. It’s the Oluce Atollo table lamp by Vico Magistretti, which was designed by Magistretti back in 1977.
The design is notable for a shade that seems to ‘hover’ on top of the base, creating not only a light, but a piece of art for your living room.
Now let’s get one thing straight. There is no way that an original Atollo would end up on the shelves of TK Maxx. Even the smallest versions are well over £400 and the larger versions with the limited edition finishes can go for much more. Well into four figures. Iconic design like this never comes cheap.
What this looks like is a lamp very much inspired by the Atollo. Similar, but not quite the same. Design experts would spot the difference a mile off. Most people rally wouldn’t. They would just presume it was something retro or vintage, from or inspired by the 1970s.
Details are sparse, but it the listing says it comes in a 44cm x 27cm and requires a 60w bulb. It also lists the price, which is just £24.99. For that price, you shouldn’t expect anything like an original Atollo. But it seems a great price for something with the look.
