If a George Nelson clock is a little pricey, there are other options out there. Like the Thunderbird midcentury modern mantel clock by Newgate.
In fact, there are a number of decent mantel clocks available right now if you are looking for something retro. The authentic midcentury modern clocks by Royale Enamel instantly spring to mind. But this is worth checking out too.
Newgate has a solid reputation when it comes to old school clocks. When it comes to mantel clocks I have featured the Wideboy in the past, with The Spy 1960s wall clock and of course, the Newgate Pluto 1950s-style starburst clock also proving popular when they appeared on the site.
But this is a fairly recent addition – and a welcome one too. A perfect addition to any midcentury modern home, it has a touch of the ‘space-age’ about it and just a touch of colour for effect against the grey and black background.
In fact, the clock has a spun aluminium face and matt black silicone case which holds the retro dial and simplified numerals. The clock also has a silent-sweep movement makes this mantel clock quieter than many others without the usual ticking noise.
A single AA battery powers the clock and the price is £60. A fraction of the price of a George Nelson reissue.
