A design classic, but not quite as you remember it. The Eero Aarnio Ball Chair gets a Mickey Mouse makeover for a limited time.
Why? Well, why not? But there is a reason. The Mickey Mouse take on this space-age classic was designed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the famed cartoon mouse from Disney.
But that was a couple of years back. In truth, this is the first time I have actually seen this variation on Eero Aarnio’s icon from 1963 offered for sale. But it is available to order right now, although the cost might just make your eyes water. More on that in a moment.
Before that, let’s look at the chair itself. This is pretty much the same chair designed 50+ years back, with the spherical seat made from fibreglass, with red seating/padding within. It’s described as a ‘room in a room’ and you would guess that’s particularly the case for kids, which this is presumably aimed at. Although not exclusively. It is a full-size chair and I know there are a lot of adult Mickey Mouse and Disney fans out there.
It’s a significant size, so you need to make sure you can fit this one into your home before you buy it. You need a doorway that is at least 79 cm wide and you’ll obviously need significant clearance elsewhere to get it into your chosen room. See the retailer’s site for full details of that.
Talking of numbers, there’s another big one to consider, which is that price. This one sells for £8,788. I know, some of you (including me) have paid more for cars in the past. But this is a tale of two icons, an investment piece that will catch the eye long after your children have grown up.
