Good to see the return of the 1960s Adidas Originals Mexicana trainers. Although numbers are likely to be very limited.
That’s because some retailers are already doing ballots for stock. Usually a sign of not many being around. Saying that one retailer is already offering their stock ‘ballot free’, so if you want a pair now, see the bottom of the article. Especially if you missed out on the Adidas website stock – that sold out in minutes.
But before that, let’s talk about the much-loved and rarely-seen Mexicana itself.
The name gives away half the story here. This is a shoe about Mexico and, specifically, a shoe that celebrated the year of Mexico hosting the Olympics – 1968. Yes, the shoe is over 50 years old and isn’t a regular on the reissue front.
But it hasn’t been forgotten about by Adidas, which has versions of the shoe in the archive. This new version is based on designs made in both Yugoslavia and West Germany. So authenticity is guaranteed in 2022.
That means a rich golden yellow suede upper with contrasting leather overlays, gold foil branding, and a rubber cup sole in white. The shape is classic, early period Adidas – slim and sleek. And absolutely timeless.
There will be demand, and this run will sell out. But as I write, Hip has all the sizes, and they sell for £89.99.
