Looking like something straight out of the 1960s, these Adidas London trainers in leather are really special.
They are also selling quickly, so if you want a pair, get in now before your size is snapped up. I’ve just done that; I know I’ll regret it in a week.
The appeal is really down to the shoe’s minimal nature. This is the Adidas look so many of us want. You can keep your collaborations and your designer reworks. Adidas works best when the fuss is kept to the absolute minimum.
It means a shoe that’s not that old but looks a lot older. The shape here harks back to Adidas’ golden age. It’s a shape that has been used many times for the City Series shoes and earlier. It was an era when sports shoes were light and sleek.
But this is actually a 1970s design. The Adidas London has been reissued since, most notably in 2008 and occasionally since – always in suede, even if the colours have changed over the years from the original red.
But we haven’t seen a leather reissue, which is why this is a big deal. I love the white with blue detailing (that’s the version I picked up), not least because of the impact of the blue lace box against the white background. But I can see the appeal in the cream and white, too.
Outside of that, detail is at a premium. No branding to the side, a gum sole, dimpled tongue. Everything you need and nothing you don’t. That’s why it looks so good.
It seems that both colours are limited editions and are only available directly from Adidas. If you want a pair, £85 is the asking price.
