I featured the 1960s dolls a while back, but the handmade 1960s gonks by Mama Bea Makes are also worth talking about.
What is a gonk? That’s a good question and one that’s hard to explain. But in terms of this gonk, it’s an animated character from the 1960s that originated in the cult classic movie Gonks Go Beat. If you are wondering, it’s not a great film, but it is interesting as a 1960s period piece.
It is interesting because it brought the world these gonks. Mama Bea Makes has recreated them, and the end result works both as a 1960s novelty and a sustainable toy for the modern era.
But they are made in limited numbers, so if you want one, you’ll need to act quickly to pick up Max or Eric. Yes, those are the names of the two currently available to purchase. The difference? The colour and the vintage cloth used for the body. Outside of that, it’s the same super-cute gone from the movie.
Not too expensive either for a handmade piece. £35 for each of them.
