Good to see the return of a vintage footwear classic – the 1960s Adidas Japan trainers.
Actually, it’s a second return, as these appeared a couple of weeks back and promptly sold out faster than I could write about them. So good to see a restock of this limited edition. Which is likely to be the only restock before they disappear once more.
And when they do, I suspect they won’t be around for some time. Adidas has released variations on the Adidas Japan https://www.retrotogo.com/2024/10/1960s-adidas-japan-trainers-return-in-black-and-white.html, but the OG version doesn’t appear that often.
An expensive version in kangaroo leather landed a few years ago, but nothing has since. So if you want a pair in the original white and red colourway, get in now. Or get the new brown version, which has the same look but in a more practical colour for day-to-day use.
The Adidas Japan, as hinted at by the name, was a shoe produced back in 1964 by Adidas for the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. A slim sports shoe that’s very of its time and, thankfully, a design that hasn’t changed much since when it comes to reissues.
The slim cut of this one is certainly one of its standout features, as well as the ‘less is more’ approach to the detail, White with red contrast touches, branding on the side in gold foil, a leather pull tab on the heel, and an off-white, low sole unit that keeps everything neat and tidy. That’s pretty much it with the Japan.
Alternatively, go for the brown leather finish, matched up with white details, similar gold branding and a slim sole. Both appealing in their own way. I suppose it depends if you want the original authenticity of the white and red or not.
If you want a pair in either shade, you’ll need £100. Plenty of stock now, but that’s unlikely to be the case as the week draws on.
